Welcome
This Teaching Web site was created to provide pedagogical support,
expose you to ideas and options, and build a resource for advice from
previous instructors. As you are reviewing the material, it is important
to stay focused on the educational goals of the CTY summer programs.
Ask yourself the following fundamental questions during the planning
of your course, and revisit them occasionally with your instructional
assistant throughout the summer.
Is
the course rigorous?
- Is the material challenging?
- Am I asking students to stretch themselves,
both in class discussions and in their written work?
- Are we making the most of each day?
Is the course engaging?
- Are the students active?
- Are my lectures brief?
- Does each day include a variety of activities?
- Am I asking students to think critically and
analyze problems?
- Do the students have an opportunity to be creative?
- Am I sensitive to pacing; moving on to a new
activity before the students start to drag?
Am I helping students to succeed?
- Do I allow for individual differences among
the students? For example, do I plan for students who move more
quickly than others?
- Rather than dismissing material as too difficult,
am I finding strategies to make difficult material accessible?
- Am I working with the students on the study
skills they need to be successful in the course?
